Dizziness is not a disease in itself, but a symptom that indicates a problem with the body’s balance system. People with dizziness often describe the feeling as if everything around them is spinning, they are tilting, or they are unsteady on their feet. In some cases, dizziness can be accompanied by nausea, disorientation, ringing in the ears, or headaches.
If you are living with chronic vertigo, don’t despair. In fact, dizziness, including the sensation of spinning (vertigo), is one of the most common symptoms today. However, that doesn’t mean you have to accept it as a “normal” part of life.
There are many ways you can proactively apply at home to help reduce the frequency and severity of vertigo attacks.
Common causes of dizziness
There are many causes of dizziness, but the most common include:
- Inner ear disorders: Conditions such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), labyrinthitis, and Meniere’s disease can disrupt the functioning of the vestibular system, the balance organ in the inner ear.
- Abnormal blood pressure: Both low and high blood pressure can cause dizziness, especially when changing positions suddenly.
- Hypoglycemia: When blood sugar drops, the brain does not receive enough energy, causing a feeling of dizziness.
- Dehydration or electrolyte imbalance: Lack of water and minerals reduces blood flow, affecting the brain’s ability to deliver oxygen and nutrients.
- Stress and anxiety: Chronic stress can increase the hormone cortisol, which affects blood circulation and nerves.
- Medication side effects: Some medications, especially blood pressure medications, sedatives, or aminoglycoside antibiotics, can cause dizziness.
What remedies help with vertigo?
Here are five simple, easy-to-implement remedies that can bring about significant improvement:
1. Stay hydrated
Dehydration is one of the most common causes of vertigo, and it often shows up sooner than you think. Staying hydrated every day not only helps maintain stable blood pressure, but also ensures that the fluid levels in the inner ear stay balanced.
If you live in a hot or dry climate, your water needs may be higher than the average recommended amount (about eight 8-ounce glasses per day). A little tip is to use a water tracking app to make sure you don’t get dehydrated. Although this is a simple measure, it is one of the most effective home remedies for dizziness.

2. Don’t skip meals
When blood sugar drops too low, dizziness is one of the common symptoms. This can happen if you skip meals or leave too much time between meals. If you eat three main meals a day but still feel dizzy, try dividing your meals into 5–6 small meals.
Maintaining a regular eating schedule helps your body avoid sudden drops in blood sugar, while also providing steady energy for your brain and nervous system. 3. Take time to sit and stand
Your body needs time to adjust your blood pressure when you change positions, especially from lying down to standing or from sitting to standing. If you stand up too quickly, blood may not have time to rush to your brain, causing a brief feeling of dizziness.
A typical example is when you first wake up in the morning: if you jump up immediately, you may feel dizzy for a few seconds. The solution is to sit up slowly, pausing for a few seconds before standing up completely. This small habit can significantly reduce the risk of dizziness caused by changing positions.
4. Take time to relax
Stress and anxiety can trigger or worsen dizziness. When the body is in a state of prolonged stress, stress hormones (such as cortisol) increase, affecting blood circulation and nerve function.
Make time for activities that help you relax: a gentle massage from a loved one, meditation, reading, a warm bath, or a cozy meal with friends and family. Finding the right “mental medicine” will help balance your body and mind, thereby reducing the frequency of dizziness.
5. Reduce the temperature of the hot water when bathing
Bathing in water that is too hot causes blood vessels to dilate quickly, leading to a drop for blood pressure and possibly causing sudden dizziness. If you often feel dizzy while bathing or immediately after bathing, try adjusting the water to a moderately warm or slightly cool level.
Not only does it help prevent dizziness, bathing in cooler water also helps you feel more alert and comfortable, especially on hot days.
