Signs, symptoms, causes and prevent osteoarthritis (OA) in seniors?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a long-term condition where your joints can become painful and stiff. This can limit your movement and ability to do things.

Signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis

People with OA may experience a wide range of symptoms. These can include:

  • Joint pain, especially when moving the joint.
  • Stiffness after resting a joint.
  • Swelling in and around the joint, especially after using it a lot.
  • Feeling like the joint is loose or unstable.
  • Less ability to move the joint.

Causes of arthritis

Arthritis includes many different types, each type will have its own cause, but can be divided into the following two groups of causes:

  • Causes in the joint: commonly seen as cartilage inflammation, degeneration, cartilage erosion, joint infection, joint trauma..
  • Causes outside the joint: commonly seen due to metabolic disorders (increased uric acid in gout), immune system abnormalities that damage components in the joint (rheumatoid arthritis). These conditions affect the function and structure of the joint, thereby causing arthritis.

Can I prevent osteoarthritis?

You can help reduce your risk of developing OA by:

  • Avoiding joint injuries or overuse — a sports injury prevention program may help.
  • Having rehabilitation for knee injuries.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight — by eating a healthy diet and exercising.

Complications of osteoarthritis

  • Poor sleep due to pain
  • Restrictions performing daily tasks
  • Reduced ability to exercise
  • A higher risk of falls in older people
  • Anxiety and depression
