Understand nutrition correctly to lose weight better

Food is not just energy for life, but a biological message sent to each cell, deciding whether you are healthy or stagnant. When the body starts to get tired, gain weight or lose balance, we really understand its meaning.

In the journey to regain shape and health, many people often start by counting calories, cutting down on portions or trying “fad” regimes such as keto, low-carb, intermittent fasting… But in fact, healthy eating is not about eating less, but eating right. The foundation of any sustainable weight loss strategy is understanding the body’s nutritional mechanism and respecting how it works.

1. What is healthy eating?

Healthy eating does not mean extreme abstinence or completely eliminating a certain food group. It is how you provide your body with enough energy, vitamins, minerals and fiber to maintain optimal functioning every day.

A healthy diet has three core elements:

  • Variety: because no single food can contain all the nutrients the body needs.
  • Natural and minimally processed: because the less industrialized the food is, the more biologically valuable it is.
  • Energy balance: meaning the amounts of calories you take in corresponds (or is slightly lower) to the amounts of calories your body expends.

When these three elements are maintained, you will not only lose weight more effectively, but also feel a clear change in your mood, skin, sleep and physical endurance.

2. Nutrient density

Not all calories are the same. 100 calories from potato chips cannot be compared to 100 calories from vegetables or salmon.

The concept of “nutrient density” refers to the amounts of vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein and healthy fats in a serving of food compared to the total calories it provides.

Foods with high nutritional density such as green vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, nuts, etc. provide many essential micronutrients without containing too many calories.

Foods with low nutritional density such as fried foods, cakes, soft drinks, fast food; they contain a lot of empty energy, easily making you gain weight but still lacking in nutrition.

Science shows that when you prioritize foods with high nutritional density, the body automatically regulates the feeling of fullness better. The hormone leptin works more effectively, helping you no longer feel hungry for no reason. This is the reason why people who eat “right” often lose weight naturally without having to force themselves.

3. Food diversity

Each food group has a separate biological value. For example:

  • Dark green vegetables provide chlorophyll, calcium and folate.
  • Red and orange fruits and vegetables contain carotenoids that help fight oxidation and protect the skin.
  • Purple and blue fruits such as blueberries and purple grapes are rich in anthocyanins, which have strong anti-inflammatory effects.

Modern nutritional research shows that the more diverse the food, the richer the intestinal microflora, and this microflora is the “control center” of the energy metabolism process. When the microflora is healthy, the body burns fat more effectively, reduces inflammation, improves mood and immunity.

Therefore, do not just eat “clean” according to a pattern, eat “richly” with many natural colors on the plate. Each meal with enough green – red – yellow – purple is a natural medicine to nourish the body and mind.

4. Harmful effects of using too much sugar and salt

Refined sugar and excess salt are two factors that most easily derail the healthy eating journey.

Sugar not only causes weight gain but also directly affects the hormone insulin. When blood sugar levels rise, insulin is released to convert it into energy, but at the same time, it also prevents the body from burning fat. This is why eating too many sweets makes you more likely to accumulate belly fat.

Salt, when used in excess, causes the body to retain water, increases blood pressure and makes you feel “bloated” than you actually are.

The solution is not to eliminate it completely, but to bring it back to its natural level: choose fresh foods, limit packaged foods, use natural spices such as lemon, pepper, garlic or herbs to enhance flavor without too much sugar or salt.

An interesting thing is, when you get used to the natural taste, the brain will “reset” its taste buds. You will find natural fruits sweeter, and foods that are too salty or sweet become unpleasant.

5. The importance of water

More than 60% of the body is water, and every metabolic reaction, from digestion to burning energy, all require it.

Lack of water slows down metabolism, the body easily confuses “thirst” with “hunger”, leading to eating more than necessary.

Drinking enough water also helps:

  • Support the liver and kidneys to eliminate toxins
  • Improve skin, reduce swelling
  • Increase the feeling of fullness if you drink 15-20 minutes before a meal

Research shows that drinking 500 ml of water before a meal can help reduce 13% of calories consumed during that meal. A simple but effective habit for those who want to lose weight sustainably.

Why is eating right better for weight loss than eating less?

Losing weight is not simply a matter of “eating less – moving more”. The human body is a sophisticated biological system that is always trying to maintain homeostasis.

When you eat too little, your body perceives it as “energy starvation” and immediately slows down your metabolism to conserve energy. As a result, weight loss is slow, fatigue is easy, and when you eat again, weight gain is faster, a phenomenon known as the “yo-yo effect”.

On the contrary, eating the right foods (high in fiber, protein, healthy fats, low in refined sugars) helps stabilize blood sugar, maintain a stable metabolism, reduce hunger and burn fat more effectively.

In other words, calorie quality is more important than calorie quantity.

In short, losing weight is a journey of understanding your body, not a battle with food. When you feed your body with natural, varied, and nutritious foods, it will naturally find its balance. A good diet, even if it changes slowly, is a sustainable change, and that sustainability is the key to a healthy, slim body and a peaceful mind in the long run.
